St. Mary the Virgin

St. Mary the Virgin

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin (pictured above) is a beautiful church with an unusual feature. Its west tower is set apart from the main building, probably as a refuge from potential flooding. However, there is also another explanation - the Devil himself was responsible for its position. Local folklore states that the Devil made an attempt to steal it one night, but found that the tower was too heavy to carry, so dropped it after taking it a matter of a few steps!

Matthews states that the apparition of a shadowy, dark figure has been seen "lurking near the tower".
